Foundation

The Kohli Foundation for Sociology is an independent private foundation dedicated to honor and promote excellent work that promises to move sociology forward. The foundation expresses its founder’s belief that sociology is indispensable for understanding the world we live in, for facing up to its challenges, and for leading it into the future.

Honoring and promoting
the curiosity for societies

Sociology is the study of societies. Sociologists are curious to learn about the dynamics of social life from childhood to old age, from individuals to states, from local to global. Sociologists explore social actions, cultures and structures that shape families, populations, economies and polities. We understand sociology as a theory-driven empirical science with a broad spectrum of subjects and perspectives, but always based on clear analytical and methodological procedures.
After a life-long career in sociological research and teaching, Prof Martin Kohli wanted to dedicate his resources to others who share the belief that sociology is indispensable for understanding the world we live in. He founded the Kohli Foundation for Sociology, which rests upon an asset stock that has been generated through salaries and investments over two generations and shall now serve the sociological community.
